At first glance a DTM car might look like a heavily modified road car but taking a closer look, you will discover quite the opposite.

All cars, whether from Audi, BMW or Mercedes, are built around an identical chasis and carbonfibre survival cell in which the engine and driver are placed quite far back. In an effort to reduce costs the gearbox, clutch, dampers and rear wing are identical in all DTM cars. The Innovative monocoque and cage are draped by an aerodynamic silhouette and this is where each manufacturer can make the difference.

Aerodynamics. There are few series where aerodynamics is so important as in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft. The DTM rules are strict, which is why each team concentrates on the smalllest details in order to make a difference within these tight regulations.

Each manufacturer interprets the regulations as they see fit in an attempt to eek out an advantage over their competitors. The slightest detail can make the difference between winning or losing.

A sleek silhouette, elongated bonnet, and contoured roofline are trademarks of these cars. Each manufacturer uses winglets and plates in an attempt to improve aerodynamic drag and through car air flow. No detail is left unturned, and this is clearly visible when looking at the wingmirrors and sideskirts – where each manufacturer offers a different approach.

The results are dramatic and a perfect subject for moody black and white photography.

Forgetting the aerodynamic functionality for just a moment, it is a great opportunity to capture plenty of aesthetically beautiful details and turn these into forms of abstract sculpture.
